The Park of the Salt Pan, across history and nature...
Since ancient times, Cervia, situated in the province of Ravenna, has been known as the city of the salt. The Park of the Salt Pan was founded in 1979, when its territory was appointed Public Natural Reserve in order to protect the outstanding beauty of its natural landscape, as well as its rich fauna. Later annexed to the Park of the Po Delta, in 2004 the Visitor centre was created to give information about the history, jobs and other aspects linked to the territory and the environmental protection of the Park of the Salt Pan. The Visitor centre gives guests the possibility to choose among three different itineraries which develop around the main historic, productive or naturalistic aspects of the Park of the Salt Pan according to the different visitors' needs.
The historic itinerary starts from the Salt Museum (MUSA) mounted in the old Torre Salt Store, one of the most important examples of the seventeenth-century industry from Romagna. Here are documents, tools and pictures of the ancient salt-pan which was situated around the centre of Ficocle, the ancient city of Cervia founded by Greek colonists. From the Salt Store it is possible to cycle to the old town of the current city of Cervia, as well as to the territories where the ancient Ficocle was situated.
The productive itinerary is a boat excursion through the salty basins which, during the hot season, turn rose. The visit leads to the Camillone Salt Pan, the latest example of craft management based on multiple collection where salters work according to the millenary tradition.
The naturalistic itinerary is based on the crossing of the salt-pan on foot or by boat under the supervision of expert naturalists and ethologists who allow tourists to discover fascinating natural landscapes where birds nest or winter. Beyond the lush flora, the visitors of the Park of the Salt Pan will have the opportunity to admire many species of rare birds which populate this protected oasis, the ideal destination for the lovers of birdwatching who can admire flamingos, stilt plovers, shledrakes and avocets.
