Visiting the province: a short guide
The great environmental heritage of these lands is the Po Delta Regional Park: the Marshes of Comacchio, the Bertuzzi Valley the Boscone della Mesola, the Oases of Cannevič and Porticino, the Sacca di Goro lagoon, the Volano Pinewood forest and the Ostellato Valleys are just some of the great natural attractions of the area, together with the city of Ferrara which, along with the Delta, has been declared a world heritage site.
Among the most famous monuments in Ferrara are the Estense Castle, the Walls, the Cathedral, the Schifanoia Palace, the Costabili Palace and the Diamond Palace where major modern and contemporary art exhibitions are staged throughout the year. Of course, the Estense capital should not be left without first tasting one of its gastronomic specialities: the salama da sugo.
Also highly appealing are the smaller towns of the province of Ferrara, which are rich in art and historical treasures. Among the most outstanding monuments in the area, Codigoro hosts the Pomposa Abbey, a masterpiece of Romanesque and Byzantine art; Mesola boasts an outstanding Castle overlooks the river, and is probably one of the most delightful d'Este buildings, the holiday home of the Dukes and protected by Unesco. Not to be missed are Belriguardo in Voghiera, the Rocca Possente di Stellata in Bondeno, the Verginese in Portomaggiore, the beautiful Benvignante in Argenta and the municipal building in Copparo, erected in the mid-19th century over the remains of a great castle. |

Another interesting work of art is the Trepponti bridge, which has a singular structure with five ramps of stairs and arches and is the symbol of the town of Comacchio, which boasts the Po Delta's most original old town. The town, which is famous for its eels, stands on thirteen islets with the houses and buildings overlooking the water. Many of its buildings were erected between the 17th and 18th centuries. Well worth a visit is the Roman Ship Museum, at Palazzo Bellini.
Besides Comacchio, Cento is also a small artistic city, renowned for its cuisine, where the traditions of Ferrara, Bologna and Modena blend together perfectly.
The history of the province narrates of nobles and their courts, but also of fishing traditions in places such as Porto Garibaldi, with brightly-coloured sailing boats moored only a few metres far from the town centre, and of life by the river at places such as Goro and Gorino. These are departure points for the boats that sail down the river until the point where this meets the sea.
Along the Adriatic coast of Ferrara are seven seaside resorts, surrounded by pinewood forests and extensive green areas: Lido di Volano, delle Nazioni, di Pomposa, degli Scacchi, Porto Garibaldi, Lido degli Estensi and di Spina. |
