National Park of the Casentino Forests

Established in 1993, it extends along 36.000 hectares in the woodland between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany. The area which belongs to the Emilia Romagna region, more than a half of the whole territory, is part of the province of Forlė-Cesena, while the area which belongs to Tuscany is situated between the provinces of Arezzo and Florence.

The Park of the Casentino forests is situated on the ridge of the Apenines, where the thickest wood in Italy has developed throughout the milleniums.

It is populated by deers, roe deers, mouflons, fallow deers and wild boars, as well as by different species of reptiles, amphibiuos and birds. The golden eagle nests on the top of the mountains; wolves and other predatories make the area an interesting naturalistic centre.

Inside the park you can choose among different paths, short walks or difficult trekking itineraries along the ridges; some itineraries are ideal to make excursions by horse or mountain bike.

In winter, it is possible to make a 600-kilometre-long ski excursion. In Tuscany are two important meccas for religious tourism, the Sanctuary of La Verna and the Retreat of Camaldoli.

An interesting itinerary for the lovers of nature is the one which leads to the waterfall of Acquacheta; along the itinerary it is possible to admire both stone and wood buildings, small rural houses and a water mill, all evidences of a past when the territory was lively and populated.

Following the mule track you can reach the plan of the Romiti, where it is possible to admire the remains of the San Benedetto Abbey. The Emilia Romagna region is rich in small villages which retain the ancient Medieval layout, remains of old mills and stone houses.

Among the most famous resorts in the territory of the National Park of the Casentino forests is the ancient Bagno di Romagna, with its sulphur springs and a beautiful old town rich in Renaissance buildings, surrounded by a green valley on the slopes of the Apenines.

Bagno di Romagna and the nearby village of Ridracoli with its famous dam are equipped tourist centres provided with campsites, farm holidays and naturalistic areas which organize excursions and rent out sports facilities.
